Repetition may seem monotonous or like a waste of time in language classes, but it is essential to language learning success.
Imagine yourself speaking in your native tongue. Do you ever only share a story once? Alternatively, do you tell a few different people? Do you share it with a friend, then later that week, when you share it with a co-worker or classmate, alter it just a little to make it shorter or funnier? Before meeting someone, do you prepare your lines of speech? Consider the justification you’ll use if you arrive late.
We frequently retell stories and have conversations in our daily lives, always trying to make them clearer, more succinct, or more interesting. Not doing the same thing over and over again… It’s about continuously improving, about observing your advancement.
For someone learning a second language, effective communication requires even more preparation and practice. We’ve all felt frustrated after doing the same thing repeatedly without any results. It can be tedious and highly demoralizing, but the truth is that we must encounter a piece of language on average 10–20 times in various contexts.
Before it becomes natural, meaning we can use it in speech without having to think about it. That entails reading it, learning it, hearing it, and repeatedly practising it until it comes naturally.
Repetition must be embraced and used as a powerful tool for language learning. Repetition is a crucial study technique, just like taking notes or watching videos with English subtitles.
How can we stop it from being tedious and frustrating, then? We have to embrace repetition and make sure it’s engaging and developmental by combining it with our visible learning techniques, which make sure that you’re not only improving each time but that by talking about that improvement.
