LEARNER CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT
At Liffey College, both formal and informal assessments are conducted in class, supervised by teachers or Academic Managers. These assessments are designed to challenge learners positively and foster their academic growth.
CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT THROUGH WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT AND WEEKLY TESTS (FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT)
At Liffey College, learners are assessed on an ongoing basis to evaluate and track their progress throughout their studies.
- Learners’ progress is closely monitored, with regular updates provided through weekly progress reports accessible via the student portal. These reports offer valuable feedback on class performance and guidance on areas for improvement.
- Each week will feature a different type of Weekly Test aligned with the week’s lesson materials, including a brief quiz, a speaking exercise, or a written task. Assessment will be conducted in alignment with the CEFR framework.
Weekly Progress Reports will incorporate the results from and engagement in Weekly Tests. Students can view their individual feedback as well as the results of their Weekly Tests through their learner portal at https://student.liffeycollege.ie every Thursday or Friday. Teachers also review students’ progress with them during a feedback session the following Monday.
PROGRESS TEST – WEEK 6 AND WEEK 12 (SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT)
In addition to continuous feedback, learners at Liffey College undergo formal assessments through Progress Tests every six weeks (Weeks 6 and 12 of each 12-week cycle). These tests cover content from the previous six weeks of the syllabus, with results evaluated based on Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) criteria. Full-time learners will complete a total of four Progress Tests during their 25-week programme.
Learners must sit their Progress Tests to be eligible for a Liffey College Certificate of Completion at the end of their course.
Each Progress Test includes seven sections:
- Grammar
- Vocabulary
- Pronunciation
- Reading
- Writing
- Listening
- Speaking
Learners receive a score for each section and an overall percentage. This score helps determine their eligibility to advance to the next level. The percentage for each test will be displayed on the Certificate of Completion, alongside an overall percentage (the average of all tests taken). The final grade classification, displayed on the certificate, is determined by the following grading scale:
- Distinction: 80%+
- Merit: 65-79%
- Pass: 50-64%
DISPUTING TEST RESULT:
If a learner believes their test results do not accurately reflect their performance, they should first discuss the issue with their teacher, who will provide detailed feedback and, if needed, consult with the Academic Managers.
Should the matter remain unresolved, the learner may meet with the Academic Managers for further clarification. If dissatisfaction persists, the learner has the option to file a grade appeal. The test will then be reviewed by at least two teachers, and their findings, along with recommendations, will be submitted to the Academic Managers for final consideration. This thorough verification process ensures fairness and consistency in teaching standards across all levels.
